Installation and maintenance information

Q:Do I need an electrician to install my kids lamps and lighting?
A: Many of our Philips lamps and lighting do not require the assistance of an electrician to install in your home.

The Table Lights in our kids lighting products range are pre-packaged with a bulb (globe) and a plug and can simply be plugged into an electrical socket without the need for an electrician.

Our other categories of bedroom decor lights, such as our Ceiling Lights and Wall Lights do require the assistance of a qualified electrician to install.

Q:How do I clean and maintain my baby night light and kids lighting fixtures?
A: Most importantly when attempting to clean any lighting fixture - be certain that the electric current is turned off before attempting to clean any lamp and/or light.

We suggest that you clean any metal components with a soft cloth, moistened with a mild liquid soap solution. Wipe clean and buff with a very soft dry cloth. Under no circumstances should any metal polish be used, as its abrasive nature may damage the protective finish placed on the metal parts by Philips.

Wood components may be polished with a fine furniture polish, taking care to avoid getting the polish on the metal surfaces. A moist cloth may be used as well but remember to wipe dry with a very soft dry cloth.

Always maintain your lighting fixture by replacing any bulb with the suggested bulb type and maximum wattage suggested by Philips.

Bulb (Globe) information

Q:Do all lights come with a light bulb?
A: Most of Globug’s home lighting products are delivered to our customers with the appropriate light bulb included in the packaging. Please refer to the product page and overview of each of our lights on this website to determine whether a bulb (globe) is included with each light fitting purchased.

You can also call one of our sales representatives for assistance in this regard.

Where a bulb is included, Globug will only supply a Philips bulb to ensure the best quality and best lumen output.

As a general rule, our lamps and lights that require an E14 or E27 bulb (globe) are not delivered with bulb included in the packaging. These E14 and E27 bulbs range from 14W/40W/60W to a maximum of 75W and can be purchased from most DIY stores. We suggest that you purchase a Philips bulb to ensure the best quality and best lumen output from your kids light.

Please refer to Philips website for more options and information pertaining to Philips energy saving light bulbs.

Q:Can I use CFL, LED or energy saving bulbs?
A: Our kids lights for boys and girls make use of Eco-halogen, CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) and LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs.
Q:What is LED?
A: LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a light source that fits easily into an electric circuit.

LED’s are illuminated by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material. As a result, LED’s don't burn out, don't get hot, and don’t use any hazardous substances. LED lights and lamps are therefore safe for all kids and baby rooms and have a long life span.

LED technology is used in various night lights sold by Globug. These include:

Ceiling lights:

  • Coccinet – a popular ladybird themed light for girls bedrooms and toddlers
  • Strea – a “star” themed light that compliments a boys bedroom decor

Wall lights:

  • Coccinet – a ladybird themed Wall Light that can be used above a bed for a toddler and compliments any baby nursery decor

Table/Desk lights:

  • myBuddy – a 3-in-1 LED light that is a reading light, a night light and a day light. The myBuddy Table Light and Desk Light is available in Blue, Green and Pink colours and compliments any kids bedroom and play room.
Q:Is it more energy-efficient to turn a lamp off or leave it on?
A: The question of "Do I turn the lamp off or let the lamp burn" is a common one in lighting. The general answer is "If you are not using the light, then turn the light off."

The cost of operating a light bulb is the wattage consumed while “on”. Given that we should all be looking to save electricity, especially in South Africa, we recommend that lights should be switched “off” if not being used.

More specifically:

Incandescent Light Bulbs Incandescent lights should be turned off whenever they are not needed, because they are the least efficient type of lighting. 90% of the energy they use is given off as heat, and only about 10% results in light. Turning these lights off will also keep a room cooler, an extra benefit in the summer.

Halogen Light Bulbs While halogens are more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs, they use the same technology and are far less efficient than CFLs and LEDs. Therefore, it is best to turn these lights off whenever they are not needed.

CFL Light Bulbs Since these bulbs are already very efficient, the cost effectiveness of turning CFLs off to conserve energy is a bit more complicated. A general rule-of-thumb is:

  • If you will be out of a room for 10 minutes or less, leave it on.
  • If you will be out of a room for more than 10 minutes, turn it off.
  • The operating life of CFLs is more affected by the number of times they are switched on and off. As a result, you can generally extend the life of a CFL bulb by switching it on and off less frequently.

LED Light Bulbs The operating life of a Light Emitting Diode (LED) is unaffected by turning it on and off. While lifetime is reduced for fluorescent lamps the more often they are switched on and off, there is no negative effect on LED lifetime. This characteristic gives LEDs several distinct advantages.

LEDs are also largely unaffected by vibration because they do not have filaments or glass enclosures.
